1. CONFERENCE THEME

"Societal Transformation in Asia Pacific: Charting the Waves of Change"

Date November 7 (Sat) – 8 (Sun), 2015
Conference Theme Societal Transformation in Asia Pacific: Charting the Waves of Change
Place Ritsumeikan Asia Pacific University (APU)
1-1 Jumonjibaru, Beppu, Oita, Japan

Themes/Topics:

Strong and relentless waves of change are sweeping the Asia Pacific region. Global forces and external influences coupled with internal constraints, conflicts and pressures constantly buffet communities, governments, corporations and civil societies that enormously test their capacities and resources to cope, adapt and grow amidst these complex and interacting factors and events. Globalization and threats of climate change, for instance, present challenges of unprecedented magnitude to the region, already beset with myriad issues such as poverty, inequality, political unrest, strained political relations, growing and aging populations, resource and environmental degradation, increasing affluence and consumption, impacts of emerging markets, urbanization and rising societal expectations for improved quality of life.

Communities and countries in the Asia Pacific Region desire and aspire for security, peace, prosperity and sustainability. The journey is daunting as it is fraught with uncertainty, turbulence and complexities. Understanding and exploring issues, factors, and strategies to successfully navigate through the rough and unpredictable waves of change are urgent. These offer opportunities for collaboration and sustained partnerships among concerned scholars, scientists, practitioners, policy-makers, professionals, individuals and groups.

This Conference is timely and relevant. Knowledge, perspectives and experiences are shared; practices are adopted and strategies are explored; and commitments are forged towards vibrant, productive, harmonious and resilient societies of the Asia Pacific region.

We share in the future of the Asia Pacific region. A shared future is necessarily a shared responsibility. Together, we can chart the waves of change.
