APU has entered into friendship exchange agreements with cities and towns in Oita Prefecture, and is now engaged in a range of exchange activities. Thus far, agreements have been signed with five cities and towns. Two of these agreements with Beppu City and Kamae Town have been signed this year.
The fifth friendship exchange agreement, with Kamae Town, was signed on April 19, 2004. Three international students have been assigned as international exchange advisors, handling primarily cultural exchange activities.
The three students were officially welcomed at a ceremony on May 1, held at the Chuo Civic Hall in Kamae Town, receiving certificates from the town's superintendent of education. The group then toured Kamae Town.
In the future, APU students will teach English at elementary and junior high schools in Kamae Town, participate in homestays and various town events, and engage in exchange activities via e-mail.
Tsurumi Town, which entered into a similar agreement in July 2003, presented the educational and cultural support advisors who visited the town with certificates of appreciation, while the welcoming ceremony for the new advisors who will help out this year was held on April 28 at the APU Convention Hall. At the ceremony, certificates of appreciation were presented to five students, including last year's advisors and students who participated in exchange activities. Certificates were also presented to the three students appointed as advisors for this year.
Finally, commemorative photos were taken of the last year's advisers and supporters dressed in happi-coats.
