As part of the human development program,
APU students can elect to do an internship and engage in actual work
at an organization or corporation in Japan or abroad.
There are two types of internships: the APU Contract Internship,
which is implemented between APU and a specific organization,
and the Privately Found Internship that encourages students to apply to
companies on their own.
Internships give students an invaluable opportunity to
experience the working world first hand.
We urge all students to consider taking advantage of an internship program.

Internship: Petron Corporation Philippines

WALI, Amar M. (APM 3, Saudi Arabia)

During my two month internship in the Treasurer's Department at Petron Corporation in the Philippines, I was assigned many accounting tasks in relation to Funds Management, was involved in activities related to exchange rates, and assisted with the placements/investments of company funds.
I was quite relaxed about my responsibilities when I first started the internship, but soon realized the importance of my duties and the significance of paying attention to details. I discovered that a small miscalculation or mishap in checking and presenting figures led to inaccurate forecasts, so I took ownership of my role in the process and worked methodically checking everything thoroughly for accuracy. Working with foreign exchange was sometimes pressurized, but I learnt to be flexible and remain calm.
Overall, the internship was a very valuable experience, I learnt first hand about joint ventures (a major study area of interest), became independent, responsible for my actions, and gained invaluable insights into possible future career paths.

Internship: Asia-Japan Women's Resource Center

MATSUMOTO Ikue (APS 4, Japan)

After graduating, I've always hoped to find a job at a non-government organization instead of getting a regular job at a company, so I completed an internship at the Asia-Japan Women's Resource Center to experience what it would be like. The organization deals with a wide range of issues facing women, from the global to the individual level.
The three week internship commenced from late August and I participated in some lobbying at the Diet and Tokyo Metropolitan Government, as well as in various demonstrations. I was impressed by the vitality of the NGO members who were actively addressing current issues that I had hardly even reflected on.
The internship made me aware of the importance of examining issues from a variety of viewpoints, and adopting an energetic approach to resolving them. The various difficulties I faced whist I was an overseas student, and my recent experiences as an RA at AP House in helping foreign students with various problems, have contributed to a desire to continue to support foreigners in Japan after I graduate. I hope to also incorporate the things that I gained from the internship into my studies and job hunting activities.
