The APU Graduate School of Asia Pacific Studies offers Master's programs in Asia Pacific Studies and International Cooperation Policy. Until now, students studying in the International Cooperation Policy program have been able to take courses in the four fields of Development Economics, International Public Administration, Environmental Policy and Administration, and Tourism Policy and Administration. The 2007 Fall Semester will bring with it the introduction of two new fields of study; Contemporary Japan Studies, available to students studying in the Asia Pacific Studies program, and Public Health Management for students in the International Cooperation Policy program. Professor YAMAGAMI Susumu, Dean of the Graduate School of Asia Pacific Studies, gives a brief outline of these two new courses.

Contemporary Japan Studies

This program, which endeavors to enrich knowledge of contemporary Japan, has been designed for students who have a keen interest in contemporary Japan and who want to pursue studies in this field, or who are already undertaking Japan studies in a foreign language (English) outside of Japan. Rather than just studying the traditional culture and ancient history of Japan, this program intends to deepen knowledge and conduct research on contemporary Japan in relation to the various global and regional issues currently facing the Asia Pacific region. Students will also study Japan in the context of interactive relations between Japan and the Asia Pacific region. In addition to the existing lecture courses on economic, social and political issues, this program will offer new courses on recent Japanese history, current Japanese politics and economics, and contemporary Japan Studies among others.

Spending One Semester
in the Center of Japanese Culture -
the Ancient Capital Kyoto

Cooperation with Ritsumeikan University's Graduate School of Letters allows students to spend their second semester in the 'Study in Kyoto' program, taking lectures at Ritsumeikan University and undertaking fieldwork in Kyoto. Enrollment in this new program will be available every Fall Semester following its inauguration in 2007. Students will complete this program in English, therefore no knowledge of the Japanese language is required at the time of enrollment. A Japanese curriculum, separate to the Master's program, is available to those students wanting to enhance their Japanese language skills.

Public Health Management

As part of APU's fundamental objective of contributing to intellectual international cooperation though fostering internationally minded individuals capable of tackling the issues facing the Asia Pacific today, this program was designed for people who are already involved in, or wanting to become involved in, administrative work or policy management related to the healthcare and medical services in developing nations. The program endeavors to give students a deep understanding of health management related research and policies. The basic structure of the program is made up of three modules; Health Policy, Health Administration and Health Education and Community. These modules will form the base for course lectures, while lectures and fieldwork will be offered for further study on current health management issues.
