“In my first year at APU we decided to make a group where students could get together in a relaxed and friendlyenvironment. Apparently some people think that all we do is drink but this isn't true. I approached the leaders of other clubs and students who were very pro-active in participating in activities on campus. I think that the experiences I have had as a part of this group, coupled with my experiences as an exchange student in China have played a key part in re-evaluating some of my personal values. There are good people, and bad people. I want to become a person who understands many different kinds of feelings. Born in Yokohama, and raised in the big city, I am now spending my university life in the country, Oita. Having lived in both places, I think this is something I would not have been able to experience in the big city. What attracted me to Nomura Securities was the energy and positive attitude of the people I met during a Nomura Securities company seminar. I decided then that I wanted to be employed at a company where I could work with people like this. The interview I had with this company was also very unique. I was asked “what would you do if you didn't like curry and your boss invited you to go to a curry restaurant?” A lot of different things went through my mind. ‘What are they really asking me?’ and ‘What are they trying to find out about me?’ I answered that ‘I would go to the curry restaurant and I would order curry’. I don't know if what I said was right or wrong but the question certainly caught me off guard.”

“I couldn't speak much Japanese when I first came to APU, so I started learning from the guidebook, and in half a year I could get by in most conversations. After taking computer courses, and discovering how much fun creating systems can be, I decided that I wanted to find a job in the Information Technology field. My future dream is to become a systems engineer involved with the development of medical software. In addition to strengthening my technical skills, I think that working in a job I enjoy will help me build up good team work skills.
As well as learning Japanese at APU, I also put a lot of effort into making friends. I wanted people to understand me; everybody feels the same way. In order to do this I would always try and listen carefully to what others had to say and talk about things that they were interested in, always with a smile on my face.
Of course I made a lot of mistakes while I was job hunting, but job hunting is a part of life and so is making mistakes. In order to not make the same mistake twice I thought very hard about what I had done wrong and why. I believe that it isn't making the mistake that is wrong, it is neglecting it and doing nothing about it that is.”
