Is it mandatory to attend the IMAT special lecture for IMAT students?
Yes. IMAT students must take IfaS required subjects while at APU. Credits from these subjects are counted as part of the credit requirements for completion of the IfaS degree and participation is mandatory.
When are the IMAT special lectures held?
IMAT special lectures are usually held during the fall orientation period (mid to late September), winter or summer session, and during the quarter break. IMAT students are informed well in advance of the schedule for the IMAT special lectures.
I am not an IMAT student but I want to attend the IMAT special lecture. Is this possible?
Yes, it may be possible. If an IMAT special lecture is open to regular APU students (3rd and 4th year undergraduate students, graduate students), the schedule will be announced on campus Terminal and interested students can apply in advance to audit the lectures.
Studying in the IMAT Program
Can I join the IMAT program?
As a rule, application for the IMAT program should be done when enrolling in the APU graduate school. However, Sustainability Science students may be allowed to apply for IMAT program after enrollment. Please consult with the Academic Office as early as possible if you are considering applying for the IMAT program.
Is it possible to withdraw from the IMAT Program?

How do I choose my supervisors?
IMAT students choose their APU supervisors in their 1st semester of enrollment and their IfaS supervisor in their 3rd semester enrollment (1st semester in Germany). The APU supervisor guides you through the entire duration of the program (2 years) to the completion of your APU Master’s Thesis / Research Report. You must keep in contact with them even while in Germany. Your IfaS Supervisor assists with completion of your IfaS Master’s Thesis and also screens your APU Master’s Thesis /Research Report, so it is very important to find one as soon as possible after going to Germany.
Do I need to submit any documents to APU while I am in Germany?
IMAT students must submit the following documents to APU while studying in Germany: 1) A revised Research Proposal by January 15, 2) Progress Report by April 10, and 3) the final Master’s Thesis / Research Report by June 15. You should regularly check Campus Terminal and your APU email address for any updates.
The first two documents are specific to the IMAT program and the format of the submission may vary each semester. You will be notified of the details in advance. The third document is required for all GSAM students, and IMAT students must follow the regular submission process. Please refer to the Graduate School webpage for details. Is there anything I should do before I move to Germany?
We will hold a Pre-departure guidance session in mid to late June to provide details of what must be done before leaving APU. Please wait for the announcement from the Academic Office.
