Information Science

Goal of the Course:

This course introduces students to the basic usage of computers, Ms-Office2000 in particular. This course is for beginners.

Standards for Achieving Goal:

Information Science: Basic understanding of computers; handling of Windows.

Word Processing: Comprehensive understanding of Word

Spreadsheets: function and statistical processing (SUM, AVERAGE, MAX/MIN, RANK, MODE, MERIDIAN, FREQUENCY, Pivot Table . . . etc.); problem solving (numerical understanding of Linear Programming and solutions with Solver / GoalSeek), etc.

Presentation: Comprehensive Understanding of PowerPoint.

Information Publishing: Understanding basic structures of HTML. Making HTML scripts. Making homepages using FrontPageExpress.

Teaching Methods:

Practical training in the Information Processing Classroom.

Overview of Each Class:

Class 1 General guidance, basics of computer, basic operation of Windows.

This class introduces students to the facilities in the classroom and the basic operations of computers. Students will practice the basic operations of Windows. Management of files is taught as well, so students have to bring their own floppy disks (3.5 FD).

Class 2. University Information System, Word Processing. This class will introduce students to the usage of our campus terminal, including report presentation, e-mail, discussion board, and forum. It also teaches word processing methods.

Class 3. Word Processing. This class will offer training for advanced word processing.

Class 4. Spreadsheets. This class will introduce students to spreadsheets, including the input of formula and usage of functions.

Class 5. Spreadsheets. This class will continue with applications of spreadsheets.

Class 6. Spreadsheets. Continued from Class 4 and 5. Students will learn how to produce graphs, and solve practice problems.

Class 7. Spreadsheets.Continued from Class 4, 5, and 6. Answers to the practice problems will be provided, and we will review all sections for spreadsheets.

Class 8. Presentation. This class introduces students to PowerPoint.

Class 9. Presentation. Practical usage of PowerPoint, and practice problems.

Class 10. HTML. Students will learn basic structure of HTML and how to make HTML scripts.

Class 11. HTML. HTML continued. Tags for graphs, etc.

Class 12. FrontPageExpress. Basic usage of FrontPageExpress

Class 13. FrontPageExpress. Making homepages with FrontPageExpress

Class 14. Reviews. Making homepages, and general review.

 

Method of Grade Evaluation:

Requirements for Students:

Always bring in your ZIP disk and FD disk (3.5). Those who have some advanced knowledge of computers are allowed to register. Such students may be assigned a teaching assistant's responsibility for beginners, which will be considered as a part of their grade.

The following should be noted when entering Information Processing Classrooms:

(1) Do not bring in any food or drinks.
(2) Do not smoke.
(3) Do not bring in wet umbrellas or coats.
(4) Turn off cellular phones. (if possible, do not bring them in.)
(5) Do not use cosmetics.
(6) Do not leave any trash.
(7) Do not talk loud.
(8) Other activities which may disturb others or harm equipment are prohibited.

Students who violate these rules can be denied permission to enter the classroom.
