Since it's inception, APU has maintained a consistently high employment rate. Students are offered a range of guidance sessions and courses, including Career Development Lectures, career guidance sessions and internship consultations. We would like to introduce an internship participant's interview and information about the new "Preparatory Course for the Civil Servant Employment Examination" that was introduced in April this year.

IWAHASHI Reona
(APS 2, Japan)
spaceI did my internship at the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology in Kasumigaseki, Tokyo from 3rd March to 14th March 2008. I was assigned to the Arts and Culture Division of the Cultural Affairs Department at the Agency for Cultural Affairs. The division is in charge of educating artists and providing support and funding to artistic organizations.
spaceDuring the internship I visited Museums and Art Museums, and observed some of the projects planned by the Arts and Culture Division. The internship was a valuable experience, through which I was able to visit places and observe things that I would normally not be able to.
spaceThe project that left the greatest impact on me was the real on-site art performance project, which offers children the opportunity to experience real stage performances. I realized the importance of this project after visiting an elementary school in Adachi-Ward, Tokyo, and seeing the excitement and curiosity with which children watched an operatic performance.
spaceThrough this internship I realized that mutual understanding and the opportunity to inspire exchanges between the art and culture fields and the local community are required. I learned that some of the funding for the development of arts and culture was paid for with the taxpayers' money, which then led me to give more thought to how taxes are used.
spaceI hope to use this valuable experience to positively communicate with people who hold different views and values to my own.

spaceAlthough the number of people wishing to seek employment in the private sector has increased in the booming economy of recent years, there are those who still want to become civil servants, even though it is a highly competitive area, due to the reduction in positions available.
spaceFurthermore, due to a review of the first-class civil servant examination carried out in recent years, the examinee is expected to be well-educated, possess expert knowledge and have a broad outlook. In addition, the examinee is also required to possess general skills in a range of fields, such as communication skills to competently fulfill one's duties and problem solving skills necessary in areas like policy making.
spaceThe preparatory course for the Civil Servant Employment Examination will be held from 18th May 2008 to 18th April 2009, and as a course in public administration, it comprises a total of 325 classes, covering the core subjects necessary to pass the exam. They are lectured directly by instructors. The lecturers in charge of this course are highly esteemed, experienced instructors from the Ritsumeikan University Extension Course and professional schools.
spaceIn addition to lectures, the course also provides support in the form of personal counseling, guidance and correction of written work, mock examinations, and areas that are difficult to study alone, coaching for interviews and group discussion. There are also career seminars held by current civil servants and the opportunity to participate in local government and ministry internships.
spaceFor students who are interested in becoming civil servants, please contact the Career Office.
